An example would be an account manager who does not fully understand business intelligence platforms like Looker or Tableau. They’d continue to act as a facilitator only without understanding additional ends of the business and how they interact with their own.

With a growth mindset, while not their primary job function, the account manager would learn at a macro level these business intelligence platforms, the basic concepts of data visualization, and how to tell their data’s story in a way that makes them more valuable as an advisor and subject matter expert.

The more open you are to expanding your skill set, even beyond your primary job functions, the more invaluable your understanding and collaboration skills become.

I have found a lot of success by using 101-level courses like business communications, leadership fundamentals, introductions to new applications and platforms, and maintaining mental health in the workplace

On paper, these seem like educational opportunities that would be too entry-level for someone with over a decade in the working world, but they’re helpful reminders and can always provide additional insights. Keep learning.

Minimalism teaches us the value of simplicity and focus. Similarly, by reframing challenges as opportunities for growth, we build resilience and a proactive mindset towards solving problems.

Focus on being constructive. It’s easy to complain, but it’s harder to complain with solutions. When you have an issue at work, follow this template:

  1. Summary: In 3-5 sentences, describe exactly what the issue is that you’re trying to solve or that is causing friction in your workday.
  2. Impact: In 3-5 sentences, describe in specific detail the impact this friction is having on you, your team, or your work.
  3. Solutions: Create at least 3 clear bullet points with a description of solutions you’d propose.

If you come to a meeting with your manager or any leader and you have a clearly communicated issue and proposed solutions, they will take you much more seriously. Being proactive means constantly pitching ideas and having a hand in the trajectory of your team.

Feedback, when given constructively, can be a powerful tool for simplification and improvement. Regular review cycles and open communication are key in creating a culture of continuous growth and learning.

Always remember that feedback goes both ways. While you’re giving your direct reports notes on tasks or places they need to expand their skills and reconsider their workstyle, be vulnerable. Be open to sharing where you think you should be improving as well and ask directly for their feedback.

The more open the lines of feedback and communication are between leaders and their teams, the simpler and easier it will be to get to a place of empathy and efficiency.

A minimalist approach in creating a supportive environment means removing obstacles to risk-taking and learning from failure. Recognize and reward behaviors that demonstrate a commitment to growth and simplicity.

Recognition is an important part of making people feel valued at work. This can come in the form of monetary rewards like spot bonuses or gift cards as well as giving short speeches about them in team wide or company wide meetings. Depending on the individual, their idea of thoughtful recognition may differ, so it’s best to ask what they prefer when you’re having a 1:1 early on.

  1. Set clear, focused learning goals: It’s important to be clear and concise when describing the goal of learning. Is it to learn a new technology? Collaborate on a shared issue? A more qualitative personal growth goal? Put these all in writing with definable goalposts.
